Part I

Old Man Hatter had been in the same place on Drummond for 5 years already, and his moving boots were starting to call to him from wherever it was he had left them. It was time to ship out and find a new location for his new adventures. After several incidents at the old Library that the court order forbids us from discussing, he knew he couldn't head back to the McGill area... he did have a bit of a reputation after all. He pretty much assumed it was in the other direction he would have to head.

As he started to ask around, he was told by his friends that there were a lot of party people hanging out around Crescent Street, so that is where he started. They never told him that they meant above Sainte-Catherine but we think it turned out better this way. As Old Man Hatter walked down towards the YWCA, he spotted the most ideal location for the new Madhatter pad.

Located halfway down Crescent, between Sainte-Catherine & René Levesque Blvd. was a building that reminded Old Man Hatter of his ancestral home and the place of his youth. Back in the days when his gut was a little smaller & and his innocence a little more …. intact. This place was perfect for the next installment in his story. A formidable main hall with Library-like landings, and a bar so long you could set up a bowling alley on it. There was a second floor that not only had elegant bathrooms, but a maze of rooms... could this be a more perfect mix of the Madhatters that came before it? It pretty much had all the signs. This was the place.

Now that the lease was signed, Old Man Hatter had to come up with a name for this incarnation. Well, “Grumpy's” was already taken, and “New Town” was a little to ... frou frou... so the thinking cap came on. It took a few days to come up with the final name, but after delving deeply into his repressed childhood memories, he came up with the perfect name. You see, the young Hatter wasn’t like the other children. By the age of 6 he was selling beer out of a rented lemonade stand, and he was putting salsa on his Chicken Burgers by the time he was 8. Whenever the other kids let him play, they always made him be the stable boy … or some hay. All he ever wanted was to be the cowboy. Now was his chance ... the Madhatter Saloon was born.

After what felt like the 3 longest months in history, Old Man Hatter and his clan finished the renovations and were ready to open the doors. The only problem was ... they couldn't figure out which door it was they were to open... it took a while, but they figured it out ... they just opened them all.

On Friday September 12th 2003, the doors to the Madhatter Saloon were open and fun was had by all.
